Hiking with my dog: The essentials for a good outdoor bonding

If you are bored of taking your dog on the same old walks every day, you might want to think about taking them with you on some hikes. Dogs are excellent companions in the great outdoors and they will love exploring new places with you. What’s more, it’s also a really great way to bond with your pooch too.

If you do want to go hiking with your dog, you will need to do a bit of extra planning and preparation, but it will certainly be worth it in the end. Here are a few steps to take to ensure that you and your dog can hike together safely.

Find Dog-Friendly Routes

Firstly, you should take some time researching the hiking routes and paths that you want to take. Most of them will be dog-friendly but a few of the challenging ones might not be suitable for your pup. Even if a trail is suitable for canines, it’s still worth taking a closer look at the distance and elevation – you don’t want to take your dog on a difficult hike for his very first one!

Don’t Go Out In Extreme Temperatures

It’s also important to check the weather before you head out too. If it is going to be very cold or exceptionally hot, then it’s best to postpone the hike until the weather improves. Every dog is different when it comes to their tolerance for temperatures, so you need to understand your dog and what they would prefer. If you take them out in chilly weather, be sure to have some booties and a jacket in case they need to warm up. If it’s warmer than usual, be sure to take plenty of water for them.

Plan Ahead For Emergencies

Hopefully, you won’t have to deal with any emergencies when you are hiking, but it’s always best to prepare for some just in case. You can never be too prepared, especially when you are with your dog! You should buy a pet first-aid kit so that you can help your pooch if they ever injure themselves or get hurt. It’s also a really good idea to research any nearby vets close to where you will be hiking just in case you need to call for assistance.

Bring Essential Items

Don’t forget to pack a few essentials for your pup. A lead is absolutely necessary; in fact, some hiking trails will state that dogs need to be on their lead at all times. You should also pack some of the best puppy food so that your dog has plenty of energy. Don’t forget plenty of water so that you and your dog have enough to drink. And whatever you do, don’t forget poop bags!

Have Fun!

Once you are all prepped and ready to go, you can start enjoying your hike together! You should find that it’s a great way to bond and strengthen your relationship. Hopefully, you and your dog will then be excited about your next hike together!
