Tinder recently launched the “Explore” feature which is a new area within the app that enables more interactive experiences.
These experiences include “Swipe Night” which offers real-time chat and interest based matching.
But as if that’s not enough, Match Group has announced an even bigger vision which is going to include shared and live experiences as well as a virtual goods-based economy.
This economy will be held together via Tinder’s new currency “Tinder Coins”.
Match has spoken broadly about their plans for a dating Metaverse and mention has been made of avatar-based virtual experiences.
Tinder Coins will be available globally next year and can be used to purchase in-app products such as Boosts and Super Likes.
What next? Virtual dinner-dates purchasable with Tinder Coins? It’s not a huge reach given that Nike has just been reported as filing a range of trademark applications for virtual trainers and clothing!
Whatever the Metaverse brings us, it’s set to be an exciting time for Match Group; with so many dating apps under the Match umbrella, it’s going to be interesting to watch things unfold.
The question is, will virtual dates take off? Is it going to be as much fun? Don’t ask Sean Rad, one-time CEO of Tinder that question though! His grasp on reality isn’t the strongest so imagine how he’s going to view life in a virtual sense!
He once famously claimed he was being wooed by a mystery supermodel who was desperate to sleep with him and that she had been ‘begging’ him for sex.
He also blamed hook-up culture on feminism with his insistence that, “feminism has led to it because now women are more independent and pursuing their desires. And that leads to both parties being more sexually active. It’s not because of Tinder.”
It’s fortunate that Whitney Wolfe Herd reinvented dating apps after her run-in with Sean Rad and fellow Tinder co-founder Justin Mateen.
She ended up bringing a lawsuit against them due to the way Mateen in particular had treated her during her time at Tinder though Rad hardly got off Scott free thanks to his inaction and the lack of support he provided for Wolfe Herd.
